Clinical Study on 315 Cases of Peptic Ulcer in the Young Male Patients

Abstract
A clinical record on 315 cases of 2nd and 3rd decades male patients with peptic gastric and
duodenal ulcers, treated at the 17th Army Hospital from January 1967 to December 1969 was
presented.
Following results were obtained.
1. The patients (315 cases) were all male between 21¡­38 years of age.
2. Among 315 cases, 163 cases were duodenal, 147 gastric and 5 combinded ulcers with their
complications.
3. Seasonal distribution was predominant in Autumn (105 cases) and Spring (79 cases).
4. The durations of peptic ulcer symptoms were distributed from 10 years to 2 weeks, most
commonly within 1 year.
5. Among operated 225 cases, 89 cases (40.5%) were intractable, 59(26.7%) perforated, 47(21.4
%) massive bleeding and 25(11.4%) stenotic ulcers.
6. 193 cases were preformed subtotal gastrectomy and 32 subtotal gastrectomy with vagotomy.
7. Postoperative complications were noted in 36 cases(16.0%) and most commonly postoperative
wound infection 32 cases (88.8%).
8. The postoperative mortality were 3 cases (1.3%).
